About me

A linguist and researcher at Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria.
Slogan : Aspire to the zenith! Never look for Very Good where Excellent is possible.

When not being a researcher, I can be found in different learning environments teaching English or encouraging learners on the whys and wherefores of academic excellence. I have published books, articles in reputable journals and chapters in mainline books. I have a strong penchant in mentoring young academics for excellence in their careers, especially in areas of English language teaching and research.

I also had trainings in certain critical areas of learning, including the Management of Higher Education at Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI), Israel, and leadership trainings at the University of Wolverhampton, UK, University of Houston, UK and Pace University, New York, USA; Supernumerary Policing from the Police Training School, Ikeja, Lagos State. I have completed the first version of my postgraduate certificate course in Online and Distance Education from the Open University of the UK.

I started teaching at the university level, in March 1996, as an assistant lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU). I rose through the ranks to the position of Professor on 1st October, 2007, in the same University. In 2010, I took up a one-year temporary appointment at NOUN on sabbatical. At the end of the appointment in 2011, I won the maiden award of NOUN’s ‘Best Lecturer on Sabbatical’ and was, consequently, offered an appointment as a Visiting Professor in the University’s then School of Arts and Social Sciences. From the visiting position, I applied and was offered a full-time tenure of Professor of English in February, 2014.

By the end of 2022, I would have done close to 27 years of teaching, research and other services at the university level, a critical part of it as a Professor of English at the National Open University of Nigeria. Throughout this period, I have been actively engaged in research activities, mainly in the following closely related specialized themes: English as a Second Language (ESL), Grammar of English, Reading and Writing Techniques, and Phonetics and Phonology of English. The results of my research activities have been assorted scholarly publications – over 90 items – peer reviewed books, monographs, chapters in books, articles, etc., in reputable local and international journals; and over 40 national and international conference presentations. As part of my contributions to scholarship, I should add that I have successfully supervised numerous master’s and 18 Doctorate candidates. Overall, the scholarly worth of my research and publications is highly recognized, not only by my professional colleagues in English but also by the broader academic community, from whom I have received many academic leadership awards.

Beyond scholarly contributions, I have served diligently in various administrative positions, including being the Coordinator of Continuing Education Programme (CEP), Sandwich Programme, and Use of English; Head, Department of English Language and Literature (all at NAU, Awka); Pioneer Director, Special Study Centre for the National Assembly (NOUN), Director, Wuse II Study Centre (NOUN); Senate Representative at the Governing Council (NOUN) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), NOUN.
